Sony DVCAM Digital VTRs & Players
Note - Sony DVCAM is a proprietary digital recording format with a different tape speed, track pitch, tape formulation, and track number than digital consumer DV, although the actual data compression is the same 8-Bit 4:1:1 (for NTSC, for PAL it is 4:2:0) sampled DCT-based compression of approximately 5:1, and an extremely economical low bit rate recording capability of 25 Mb/s for standard definition active picture.  Audio in the DVCAM tape footprint is 2 Channel 48 kHz or 4 Channel 32 kHz (different DVCAM VTRs may or may not provide I/O access to all channels in the 4 channel mode).

Notes for DSR-45A: Digital NTSC DV/DVCAM 25 Mb/sec 8-bit 5:1 DV type DCT based compression, interlaced 525/30frame format NTSC (480 active line), giving you a choice of NTSC DV (SP mode only) playback, or NTSC DV/DVCAM edit recording/edit playback. Mini 63 minutes or less or Standard Cassettes.

The NTSC DSR-45A comes standard with RS-422A (as a player only) and RS-232C interfaces. Equipped with a 2-inch built-in color LCD, the DSR-45A displays information including; audio level, system status, and the working image.  The DSR-45A is equipped with Time Code I/O (BNC), and a 4-pin I-Link (DV) interface.  The DSR-45A will transform unlocked audio into locked audio at the iLink interface (on DV playback, or upon input).   The DSR45A has an external reference input for (limited) synchronized playback with other VTRs, and is equipped with component analog input and output, balanced audio out (XLR), unbalanced audio input (pin jack connectors), analog composite and Y/C I/O.

The I-Link interface cannot be combined with other signal interfaces for input selection.  The DSR45A is not equipped with a synchronization feature (no capstan servo bump), and may be only selectively used in A/B roll editing as a source feeder in situations which do not create a lock-up problem between VTRs.  This unit does not perform Assemble edits, however, with regard to I-Link recording (where picture and audio get replaced or recorded together), frame continuity between frame boundaries is possible plus or minus 5 frames, assuming you have not changed modes from DV to DVCAM, or have not changed audio modes from 2 channels to/from 4 channels, and that you have initiated the unit to record within a discernable frame boundary (such as adding on to a previously recorded section at the last frame, or recording over a section.

When recording in DV (SP mode), transitions between cut to cut may not be smooth, and transitions between DV and DVCAM or in DVCAM between 2 channel audio mode and 4 channel audio mode should not be attempted.   There is no setup removal upon analog input.  The output setup level can be adjusted, as can the video output level and chrominance signal output level.

Simplified DVCAM VTR Performance Charts:
(We suggest you call us for more details, updates, and changes)

Insert Editing from I-Link or IEEE sources:
The I-Link interface cannot be combined with other signal interfaces for input selection.   Insert video and/or audio editing from I-Link or IEEE or SDTI/QSDI sources is NOT possible on any Sony, Panasonic, or JVC VTRs.  When you select I-Link or IEEE or SDTI/QSDI as an input source, the digital file itself is attempting to be transferred line recording standard to matching line recording standard according to the limitations of compatible source and record VTRs, including picture, audio (if transferring DV to DV or DVCAM to DVCAM, or DVCAM to DV), and potentially time code (time code will not copy onto some VTRs, and Drop Frame Code VTRs will not recognize Non Drop Frame Code).
Playback of MiniDV recorded in SP mode:
With the exception of the DSR-85 (discontinued), all other NTSC Sony DVCAM VTRs and players with I-Link capability play NTSC MiniDV compliant tapes that were recorded in SP mode (only), and output unlocked audio through the I-Link port.  The DSR-70A (discontinued) and DSR-2000 (discontinued) VTRs when they are equipped with the optional I-Link boards will lock audio from DV in SP mode through I-Link, or when equipped with the optional SDTI/QSDI boards, and will lock audio from DV in SP mode through SDTI/QSDI.  The DSR-2000A and DSR-2000 (discontinued) are the only units that will support LP mode DV playback.  Additionally, with the exception of the DSR-11 and DSR-25 dual standard NTSC/PAL desktop VTRs, you cannot get PAL playback output on NTSC DVCAM VTRs (PAL viewing is possible on the DSR-50 LCD monitor, but no PAL output is available), and similarly, cannot get NTSC playback on PAL DVCAM VTRs.
Playback of MiniDV recorded in LP mode:
The NTSC Sony DVCAM DSR-2000A and DSR-2000 (discontinued) VTRs are the only professional Sony VTRs that plays back NTSC DV video with digital (SDI, I-Link through option, and SDTI/QSDI) and analog output that was recorded on Sony DV equipment in the LP mode. The DSR-2000A and DSR-2000 VTRs may be useful in recovering track misaligned recordings (such as from a dropped camera).
Playback of standard DVCPRO (25 Mb/s) recordings:
The NTSC Sony DSR-2000A DVCAM VTR, the NTSC DSR2000 (discotinued), the NTSC DSR-1800, the NTSC DSR-1600, and the NTSC DSR-1500A, the NTSC DSR-1500 (discontinued) and the DSR-70A (discontinued)   will play back NTSC DVCPRO format tapes with both analog output and SDI output (the SDTI-CP option board port on the DSR-2000 (discontinued) will work with a DVCPRO source which will convert it to MPEG-2 format at the output, but the SDTI board option was discontinued, and it would not work with DVCPRO anyway).  Also, the only Sony I-Link port that will work with DVCPRO is the standard I-Link of the DSR-1500A.
Locking Audio from a DV source, I-Link or SDTI/QSDI Audio:
The new DSR-2000A will lock audio from a DV source and comes standard with I-Link I/O.  When equipped with the optional SDTI/QSDI board, the DSR-70A and the DSR-2000 which comes standard with the SDTI board will lock audio from DV in SP mode through SDTI/QSDI and one can transfer between DV source and DVCAM record using SDTI/QSDI.  As of this writing, you may asume that Sony SDI equipped DVCAM VTRs will only provide embedded audio with picture from DVCAM and DVCPRO (25Mb/s) sources through the SDI option, and will not provide embedded audio with picture through the SDI option from DV sources.
Embedded Audio through an SDI option:
Sony SDI equipped DVCAM VTRs will provide embedded audio with picture from DVCAM and DVCPRO (25Mb/s) sources through the SDI option, and will provide internal conversion to 48kHz embedded audio to and from 32kHz.  The SDI option uses and assumes Group 1 Assignment only.  Changing audio modes between 2 and 4 channels while recording or when asemble editing is reported to be not supported.
Serial Component Digital Interface (or option):
Sony DSR-2000A  (standard, for DVCAM, DVCPRO 25Mb/s and DV SP or LP mode sources on output), DSR-2000 (discontinued, standard), DSR-1800 (option, limited to DVCAM, DVCPRO 25Mb/s and DV SP mode sources on output), DSR-1600 (output option, limited to DVCAM, DVCPRO 25 Mb/s and DV SP mode sources on output), DSR-85 (discontinued, option, limited to DVCAM and DV sources on output), DSR-80 (discontinued, option, limited to DVCAM and DV SP mode sources on output), DSR-70A (discontinued, 1 option, SDI or I-Link or CAV limited to DVCAM, DVCPRO 25 Mb/s and DV SP mode sources on output), DSR-60 (discontinued, output option only, limited to DVCAM and DV SP mode sources on output).  All DVCAM VTRs with SDI options support embedded audio (see Embedded Audio through an SDI option Section above).
Pre-Read Edit Recording:
Sony DSR-2000A, DSR-2000 (discontinued), or DSR-2000P (discontinued) and DVCAM recording only (pre-read editing works only with common line processing delay times associated with cuts editing, production switcher wipes or mixes, but not DVE or any other frame-based delays).  Pre-read also only works with the SDI or analog inputs, not with I-Link or SDTI/QSDI).  In the pre-read mode one can also perform sound-on-sound capability, audio mix/swap and over-dubbing of new audio while watching the picture output with no delay between video and audio.
Separate Time Code Inputs/Outputs:
Sony DSR-2000A, DSR-2000 (discontinued), DSR-1800, DSR-1500A, DSR-1500 (discontinued), DSR-1600 (output only), DSR-70A (discontinued), DSR-85 (discontinued, with optional DSBK-130 only, and the DSR-85 even as equipped will not support VITC), DSR-50, DSR-45, DSR-1/1.
No Time Code Inputs/Outputs or TC Preset or TC Regenerate:
Sony DSR-V10 (discontinued), DSR-11, DSR-20 (discontinued), DSR-25, DSR-30 (discontinued), DSR-40 (discontinued)do not have a separate time code input port or output port nor do they support TC Preset or Regenerate.  The DSR11, DSR-45 and units higher in model number (DSR1500A, DSR1600/DSR1800/DSR2000) have TC super (on/off) capability on the (or a designated) composite video output.  The DSR-11 and DSR45 also have TC super capability on the Y/C output.  The DVCAM walkman units may or may not have a TC super capability.  The DSR25 does have a separate composite video monitoring output, and so if TC super is turned on, it is visible on both the analog composite video output and the Y/C output, and one cannot thus derive a clean analog output (unless or until the TC super is turned off).
No clip link support:
Sony DSR-11, DSR-V10 (discontinued)
Genlock Input:
Sony DSR-40 (discontinued), DSR-45, DSR-70 (discontinued), DSR-70A (discontinued), DSR1500 (discontinued), DSR1500A, DSR1600, DSR1800, DSR2000 (discontinued), DSR2000A

Due to the physical size of the backplane of the Sony DSR-70A (discontinued) portable VTR, and DSR-1500 (discontinued) or DSR-1500A one-half rack width VTR, analog audio playback is limited on these machines to 2 channels even in the 4 channel mode (either Ch 1 & Ch 2, or Ch 3 & Ch 4).  The DSR-1500 may prove to have some limitations in audio editing, and it canot independently insert edit audio in the 4 channel mode.  Check back for further details.
