Sony HDCAM High Definition Digital VTRs & Players

Special Notes: See also the section on JH HDCAM Players.  HDCAM  normal record and playback frame rates are 25/29.97/30 (device depending), but  in the later versions of Sony /20 models, include 23.98/24 CineAlta frame recording and playback (again, device depending).  HDCAM CineAlta (for Cinema Alternative) refers to the additional  HDCAM frame rates of 23.98/24 (device depending). 23.98/24 Frame 1080 HD Recording is part of the ATSC HDTV Delivery Standards, and, without 3:2 Pull Down, represents a savings of up to 25% in storage costs over 29.97/30 frame rates.  In addition, many display and digital processing devices now support 23.98/24PsF input, making HDCAM CineAlta VTRs well suited for production facilities wanting to deliver lower cost high quality 8-Bit HD-SDI component digital content for television, cable, industrial, corporate, educational, and point of sale applications.

HDCAM SR refers to a different tape format with a different tape stock, data rates, and tape speeds, and is not supported in current HDCAM VTRs or Camcorders.   The exception is the new combination SRW-5500 Multi-Format HDCAM-SR/HDCAM VTR (see the HDCAM-SR Section of this web site and call VTP for additional information).

The upgrade was possible only for the following serial numbers:  HDW-2000/1 16001 and higher, PAL units 46,000 and higher.
