Multi-format
Mastering VTR.
The Panasonic HD AJ-HD3700B D-5 HD Multi-format Mastering VTR (5 RU height) integrates
effectively into production, post production, and telecine environments for full 74.25MHz
luma sampling (full specification 30MHz recorded bandwidth) and 37.125 MHz chroma
sub-sampling (15 MHz recorded bandwidth per weighted chroma channel), offering HD-D5
10-bit 5:1 Intra-Field DCT with Variable Length Coding Digital Compressed 1080/59.94i,
1080/24PsF, 1080/23.976PsF, 1080/50i or 720/59.94p High Definition at 10-Bit or D-5 10-bit
uncompressed 480/59.94i with selectable (format dependent) 4-Channel 20-bit/48kHz or
8-Channel 24-bit/48kHz audio, and 576/50i with 8-Channel 24-bit/48kHz audio.
An optional, 2RU outboard dual HD-SDI Link AJ-HDP2000 2K JPEG2000 Compression Processor
has been introduced with 3rd Level ECC (including CRC on each data link) for an additional
Data Mode to and from the Processor and the AJ-HD3700 unit. This 2-piece combination
is designed to support post-production and telecine systems in providing a cost-effective
and efficient method of recording, editing, and archiving up to 155 minutes of 12-bit
4:4:4 2048x1080 resolution image data with time code, and digital audio. Search and FF/REW
use low resolution proxy images.

Using D-5 1/2" HD tape, the AJ-HD3700B Records and
Plays HD D-5 1080i/29.97 4-Channel audio, 1080p/23.976/24/25 8-Channel audio,
1080PsF/23.976/24/25 8-Channel audio, 720p/59.94 4-Channel or 8-Channel audio, and D-5
480i/59.97 4-Channel or 8-Channel audio, and 576i/50 8-Channel audio. There is
advanced TC support for playback "Slew" to 25 frame PAL of a 1080/24p master, or
between 25, 24, and 23.976 masters. (Note: Pure 60Hz 1080i/60 record and playback is
inhibited and thus not possible in this unit). The AJ-HD3700B has standard RS-422
protocol (with advanced TC support for 24/30 serial operations over the predecessor A
version) and supports pre-read video and audio in the 480i/59.94 and the 576/50i modes.
Simultaneous HD and SD outputs are available for many recording and playback speed
combinations using the built-in format converter board (now included with the B
version). 23.98/59.94 or 24p/60i lock requires locked simultaneous analog BB and HD
analog Tri-Level reference (SMPTE 318M 6 Hz pulse is not required). Slew of 24 frame
to 25 frame is possible with down conversion to PAL through the built-in down convert
board with no external reference, provided selection of playback frequency is in the auto
mode, and that external reference is actually de-cabled. It is altogether desirable
to provide appropriate external reference that is matched to the desired performance on
both the standard definition reference input and the high definition reference
input. For extraordinary control over filtering when downconverting to standard
definition from an HD Recording, a specially shaped advanced vertical frame/field filter
(with bypass) is provided on the down-convert output from progressive (frame-based)
23.98/24 P or PsF tape playback modes.
PCM audio data mode for standard HD/SD video
recording/playback.
The AJ-HD3700B is capable of 4 or 8 channel PCM data
mode, capable of supporting 8 discreet 48kHz/24-bit digital audio channels available to
effectively support editable 5.1 surround and a stereo pair. The 8-channel mode is
currently the factory default choice during 1080/24Psf(23.976Psf), 1080/50i, and 576/50i
modes, but can be selected when recording 1080/59.94i and 720/59.94p modes, as well as
480/59.94i. For the SDI mode, and for compatibility when recording 1080/59.94i and
720/59.94p modes with other 4 channel only AJ-HD2700, AJ-HD-2000 VTRs, 4 channel
48kHz/20-bit digital audio is available. Therefore, in the case of Dolby E,
recording 5.1 audio can be done by recording either encoded Dolby E in an AES pair with
the sample rate converter turned off in 4 channel mode, or 6 separate tracks of digital
audio plus a stereo L R pair in the 8 channel mode.
Metadata.
For standard video playback and recording
SMPTE291 standard Ancillary Packet Formatted non-compressed metadata and SMPTE 334 V-ANC
closed caption data in the VBI are supported standard in HD recording and playback, as
contiguous first-come first-served data stored between the SAV start of active video flag
and the EAV end of active video flag of lines 9-20. No V-ANC is carried when video
format or frame rate is converted. Other types of V-ANC data such as Program
Description as per SMPTE 207, or miscellaneous data in the VBI per Recommended Practice RP
208, or as described under NABTS, or as customized by the user (such as for D-Norm Audio
Metadata) can be supported following the rules for Type 2 packets, provided that the data
is contiguous, left justified in respective places, and fits within the V-ANC spaces,
again, as within lines 9-20 as 960 8-bit words per line, or if in the 10-bit mode, 720
10-bit words per line. There are a maximum of 1920 bytes per field of information
grouped as lines within the V-ANC space, whereas there is an additional 960 bytes per
field of non-compressed space available for metadata as H-ANC in the packet areas between
the EAV end of active video and SAV start of active video of all active HD lines, as type
1 or type 2 using the same ground rules. This area would be suitable for EDH Error
Detection and Handling under Recommended Practice RP 165, ATC under Recommended Practice
188, LTC/ANC under Recommended Practice 196, expanded channels of embedded audio tracks
under SMPTE 272/292, such as optionally supported with the AJ-D3700H in the 8 channel
mode, or for other customized applications. All non-compressed data spaces in D-5 HD
on the AJ-HD3700B amount to 2880 bytes per field, or 5,760 bytes per frame, or about 1.38
Mb/s.
For Optional Data Mode playback and recording
Metadata input is handled through the Optional 2K AJ-HDP2000
Processor Unit when correctly attached to a modified 3700 Series model (or unit that has
factory shipped after September 2007).
This is an SDI Embedded VANC function of the Y signals in the A channel of the Dual Link
path only, but up to 2,880 bytes (words) per segmented frame is supported. Metadata
output signals are limited to the main output, and are not supported on the Monitor
output.
Other Notes and Options.
Note: both the video and audio 4-Channel mode and the 8-Channel mode recordings are not
playback or record compatible in the HD-D5 format, and are not playback or record
compatible in the 576/50 PAL D-5 format with regard to legacy PAL D-5 4-channel VTRs and
recordings, however, the AJ-HD3700B will play back the 576 PAL D-5 4-channel recordings.
Intra-field compression is employed which enables individual fields or frames to be edited
through external field-based edit controllers. The down conversion (the AJ-UDC3700
board specific to the B version) is incorporated into the B version and is thus no longer
an option. This "B" version of the VTR has proven to be highly stable (as
of April 2005, version software has remained the same since the inception of the B
model). The only exception is that enabling software for 1080i/59.94 tape formated
playback to 720p/59.94 cross converted output format within the VTR is available as a
Service upgrade of approximately $3,500 through the PBTSC Service Company.
