Sony XDCAM Standard Definition Optical Media Systems

Special Notes:  Sony has designed and introduced a revolutionary  new tapeless optical disc recording system of special camcorders, and supporting devices for production and post-production applications, based on a blue-ray optical laser and professional blue-ray DVD media called "XDCAM".  XDCAM offers users unprecedented advantages over tape-based media, such as non-linear access, proxy and metadata handling, robust recording and playback with inexpensive re-useable professional optical disc media, and a longer projected shelf life.

The "codec" used to create or read the compressed video media is also independent of the XDCAM Media itself, such as in allowing for a seamless transfer through a network architecture, mounting media in a non-linear application, or, device depending, switching between MPEG IMX 50Mb/s MPEG-2 Studio Profile I frame compression and Motion JPEG-based DVCAM compression (e.g., in the versatile PDW-530 XDCAM Camcorder).

XDCAM discs are a different type of media format than videotape.   Although XDCAM Media discs may at first glance look physically the same size as Consumer Blue-Ray Media, they will require a professional XDCAM supporting device to record or play back.   As for the XDCAM products showing below, the 72Mb/s read/write capability of the laser and disk media system is utilized only for standard definition recording and playback.

Features:

16:9/4:3 Switchable Power HAD™ EX CCDs.

The PVW-530 and the PVW-510 incorporate three 16:9/4:3 switchable CCDs for image capture, with a high signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dB (NTSC), lower smear level of -140 dB (typical), high sensitivity of F11 and a 12-bit A/D converter.  The camcorders use a traditional BVFV20 2.0 inch monochrome viewfinder and have a built-in 2.5 inch color LCD monitor as well.

Compact, Lightweight, Shock/Dust-Resistant Disc Drive. PDW-530 and the PDW-510 each weigh approximately 5.3 kg (11lb 10oz) including viewfinder, microphone, disc and BP-IL75 battery pack. Also, to minimize errors caused by shock or dust entering the disc drive, disc drive portion is concealed by two lids helping to prevent any dust from entering the drive. In addition, four rubber dampers are used to hold the disc drive block in place helping to absorb the shock that would otherwise go into the drive.  The camcorder has been proven in testing to operate in low temperatures similar to tape based camcorders.

Loop Recording.
Loop Recording is provided on both camcorders when it is enabled whereby up to 10 seconds of audio and video signals are buffered into memory even before the Record button is pressed.  This is useful for all types of image capture, from news, to sports, to digital production of reality-based or dramatic standard definition DTV programming.

Progressive Mode.
Both camcorders provide progressive modes to offer a film-like shutter effect: 29.97-frames per second or optional 23.976-frames per second with the CBK-FC01 24P Pulldown Board.

Thumbnail Search and Scene Selection.
The 2.5-inch color LCD screen provided the side panel enables thumbnail search and scene selection functionality. These functions enable quick random access to each clip and the capability of creating a scene selection list.  Selected clips can be played back seamlessly out of the camcorders according to the list.

Proxy AV.
Both the PDW-530 and the PVW-510 create and store low-resolution 2Mb/s MPEG-4 video/audio into disc media along with high-resolution video/audio recording, and metadata (including date/time/location and edit list "scripts"). Proxy AV provides for a fast method of work flow browsing and editing of low resolution content, and a faster transfer over network connections from the camcorder than the full bandwidth video/audio content. This enables users to save time by beginning the editing process before the original full resolution media needs to be available.  The
PDZ-1 Windows Proxy Browsing Software for Proxy editing is included with the camcorders, and supports simple cuts editing with clip trim, audio, and Time Code, media transfer, and the creation of a .SMI "script" file for an EDL Edit Decision List.

Network Connectivity.
In addition to conventional AV interfaces, the PDW-530 and the PVW-510 both provide an i.LINK® interface as well as optional PCMCIA card adapter for 100 Base-T Ethernet connectivity. The adapter card enables a hook up with an external PC directly from the camcorder, and provides file transfer capability (using AV/C protocol transfer is in real time, using SBP2 protocol on IEEE iLink transfer, up to 30x for proxy AV file, up to 2.5x for DVCAM™ file, up to 1.5x for MPEG IMX® 50Mbps file), as well as e-Support. In addition, DVCAM output is a selectable output from the camcorder over iLink upon MPEG IMX playback.

Durable, Re-useable Medium. Optical discs have no mechanical contact during recording or playback.  Sony Professional Disc Media is packaged in an extremely durable and dust-resistant cartridge, and is also highly resistant to shock, scratches, heat, humidity, and the affects of X-Rays.

Sony Depot Warranty. Sony offers a Sony Depot 1 Year Parts and Labor Warranty, 2 Years on the CCD Prism Block, and a 7 Year Parts and Labor Warranty on the Optical Laser Block.

XDCAM Audio. Because there is up to 72Mb/s processing power per optical head (some future devices will support 2 head read and write), robust optical recognition phase change recording code, and ample room on the Professional Disc Media, these camcorders offer some other unique features as well, such as 4 channel 48 kHz audio at 16-bit in either the DVCAM picture mode or the MPEG IMX picture mode, and a 24-bit MPEG IMX 4 Channel audio mode.

XDCAM Extended Family. Sony offers these two high performance camcorders and three unique "decks" to create the XDCAM work flow innovation.  While content transfer from the camcorder is standard using AV/C iLink protocol, or faster than real time via iLink SBP2 data protocol, Ethernet transfer is also possible with the CBK-NC101 Ethernet Card. Sony also offers a PDW-V1 Mobile Deck with LCD display, and a PDW-1500 Compact Deck.  In addition, NLE Editing is supported natively of IMX and DVCAM in a variety of third party products, and Sony's own XPRI NLE Editing System.   *Note: the LCPDW5H shipping case holds both a PDW-510 or 530 camcorder and either an AC-550 or a PDW-V1.

Other accessories include: WRR855B Series Reciver (audio); ACDN2B AC V-Lock Adaptor; RMB150//A Handheld Remote.
