3D Stereoscopic Operations

The SRW-5800/5100 series when equipped with the options (the HKSR-5803HQ in the SRW-5800 series, the HKSR-5103 in the SRW-5100 Series) can play back SRW-1 material shot in 4:2:2 Dual Stream 3D Stereoscopic mode (422DUAL) or recorded as 3D 422x2 (422 3D YPbPr) in an SRW-5800 series, providing simultaneous channel A and channel B output from the main HD-SDI output links A & B (user sets the system menu to an appropriate 422x2 3D mode, Format Converter outputs require the HKSR-5001 or HKSR-5001/20 to be active).  There is a user menu defined monitoring mode for the main output and the format converter output for 3D in these series units for seeing both channel A and channel B at the same time on one link, and they support 3D Stereoscopic recording.  There are no significant changes in this area with the /2 units, however, the SRW-5800/2 units will eventually be upgradeable to support 4:4:4 3D recording at a future time (probably in 2011), meaning 4:4:4 3D playback upgrade for the SRW-5100/2 may be possible as well.

The SRW-5500, and SRW-5000 series can play back either channel A or channel B of the Dual Stream 4:2:2 recording, users select dual stream playback mode and the stream to be played back via menu (Format Converter outputs of the selected stream require the HKSR-5001 or HKSR-5001/20 to be active).  There is no monitoring mode for 3D in these series units for seeing both channel A and channel B at the same time, and they do not support 3D Stereoscopic recording.  There are no significant changes in this area with the /2 units over earlier units, however, the /2 units do not appear to us to be upgradeable to support 4:4:4 3D playback at a future time when that feature will be offered in the SRW-5800/2 (probably in 2011).

SR Motion Effects Operations

The SRW-5800/5500/5000/5100 /2 series can play back a 4:2:2 1080/60p tape in 24p, 25p, and 30p mode, producing a desired slow-motion effect in playback at normal speeds. It is also possible to play 4:2:2 1080/60p recordings at normal speed by playing back (skipping) every other frame, so only 30 frames in total are played back. The SRW-5800/5100 /2 series can also play back in full 4:2:2 1080/60p mode at speed 1.0, offering smooth pictures for playing back fast moving scenes.The SRW-5800/5500/5000/5100 /2 series can play back a tape recorded with the SRW-1 Select FPS function at 24p, 25p, and 30p SQ mode, 4:2:2 SQ or 4:4:4 SQ, producing slow and fast-motion effect in playback at normal speeds.  50/59.94/60P 1080 4:4:4 SQ playback is supported at half-speed (.5).

SRW-5100/2 Option HKSR-5105

iLink is 4:2:2 1080/50/59.94i 25Mb/s MPEG-2 transport stream output only (2K modes not supported or converted) for 1920 off-line work of 1920/720 source tapes, and 1080/720P HDMI output (1080 4:4:4 or 4:2:2, or 720P depending, 2k modes not supported or converted) for viewing HDCAM SR or HDCAM playback with certain consumer monitors (with HKSR-5105, HKSR-5003 also required for 4:4:4 over HDMI, and in all operations, output send is no signal or certain pre-determined CEA-861 formats or has been stated by Sony to be PsF, which will depend on user settings, HDMI connections and capabilities of the HDMI monitor, specifications subject to change without notice).

Sony HDCAM-SR Approach for Advanced Video and File-based Versatility
 
In the digital image acquisition and post production processes, the opportunity to capture, preserve, view, and manipulate the original RGB spectrum image channel bandwidth was generally reserved for the use of film media itself, or for disk-based digital record and file playback systems. Sony Electronics continues to refine its unique family of advanced magnetic tape media recording technologies as part of the HDCAM-SR videotape mastering system for the film and television industries. Some of the latest refinements include adding 4:4:4 SQ mode capability to the base SRW-5000/2, SRW-5500/2, SRW-5800/2, and SRW-5100/2 models.  2K 10-bit RGB 4:4:4 or 12-bit XYZ video mode recording and playback was added to the new SRW-5800/2 Recorder/Player when optioned with the HKSR-5803HQ, and 2K video mode playback was added to the new SRW-5100/2 when optioned with the HKSR-5103.  New data modes supported by the SRW-5800/2 through its optional HKSR-5804 Network interface and the optional HKSR-5803HQ continue to attract the attention of those producing content through file based workflows using SRW tape-based data exchange within various Digital Intermediate digital cinema processes.

Using advances in Sony metal particle tape structure, the half-inch antioxidant base formulation HDCAM-SR media provides for the industry's highest real-time compressed video recorded data rate to tape of up to 880 Mb/s for active picture in the optioned SRW-1, and optioned SRW-5800. The HDCAM-SR video mode formats utilize 10-bit video recording for 1920x1080 and 720P, and 10-bit and 12-bit for the new SRW-5800/2 2K video modes, all with mild MPEG4 Simple Studio Profile (SStP) compression rates, advanced wavelength channel coding, and a self-aligning data track architecture. SRW data modes on HDCAM SR tape are uncompressed.

More about the SRW-1 and SRPC-1
The SRW-1 looks like a traditional record unit that could attach to an HD camera head, but rather, it actually requires the combination of the SRPC-1 HD Processor unit to function unless it is docked directly to the Panavision/Sony Genesis digital camcorder system, or the Sony F23/F35 camera heads.  When the SRW1 is docked directly to these camera heads, the HD processor is built inside, so the SRPC-1 is not needed to record.  But to those who would otherwise want to operate the SRW-1 for recording or playback, the SRPC-1 is required. The compression ratio in 4:2:2 YCbCr recording SQ (Standard Quality) Mode at 440 Mb/s is 2.7:1, and in 4:4:4 RGB the compression ratio is 4.2:1 in the SQ (Standard Quality) Mode at 440 Mb/s.  In the SRW-1, 2x record speed (up to 880 Mb/s) is possible in either the SQ Mode, for synchronized 4:2:2 dual camera "stereo" HD recording (422DUAL mode), or, for special over-crank high speed video and Time Code capture mode for slow motion playback (422x2 Select FPS modes), or, for unique 4:4:4 RGB recording in HQ (High Quality) Mode.  In the HQ Mode the RGB compression for 1920x1080 4:4:4 is only 2.1:1. 

Currently, HQ mode 4:4:4 1920x1080 50P recording is only supported on the SRW-1 when it is optioned with the HKSR102 and HKSR103 and is directly docked to the Panavision/Sony Genesis digital camcorder system, or the Sony F23/F35 camera heads.  HQ mode 4:4:4 1920x1080 59.94/60P recording is only supported on the SRW-1 when it is similarly optioned and directly docked to the Sony F23 camera head.  Playback of HQ mode 4:4:4 1920x1080 50/59.94/60P will be at half speed on either the SRW1/SRPC1 using Dual Link, or the SRW5100 with option HKSR5103 or the SRW5800 with option HKSR5803HQ.  Format conversion in the SRW5100 would further require the option HKSR5001 and in the SRW5800 the HKSR5001.

Post facilities wishing to accommodate SRW-1 recordings made in the HQ Modes may now consider the SRW-1/SRPC-1 as well as the SRW-5800 and SRW-5100 for HDCAM SR playback. The SRW-1 and the SRW-5100 will not support data mode playback.

The SRPC-1 is the HD Digital VTR Adapter for the SRW-1 with detachable control panel (required for stand-alone record or playback, except as built-in to the Panavision/Sony Genesis).  Although one adapter was originally designed to facilitate 2 SRW1 recording operations, this capability was not enabled, and so it remains that one adapter must accompany each SRW-1 when used in stand-alone (non-docking) record or playback.
