The PVM 740 uses the new OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, with Sony’s “STE” (Super Top Emission) structure.  The PVM 740 can display extremely wide gamut colors and repel panel glare so that "on set" or "in the field" viewing is simple and accurate. The new “Flip” feature can swap the image horizontally, vertically, or combined so that over and under 3D rig viewing is a simple push of a button. The SD/HD/3G input is an option so even display of HD 60P images is supported.

The chassis is made of cast aluminum for durable in field use and includes a protection panel for the OLED.  The PVM 740 comes standard with one composite, one auto detecting SDI/HDSDI/3G input. One HDMI input, internal waveform monitor, AC power adapter, and ¼ and 3/8 holes for camera mounting.

BVM-E250, BVM-E170 and select comparative detail:

External Control for the BVM-E Series is required

The input signal selection and various functions are controllable via a peer to peer or network connection with the BKM-16R7 Ethernet  controller (sold separately as an option).  There are no controls on the BVM-E250 itself for the user other than power off/on, and the network or peer mode choice select switch for Ethernet connectivity. See below for control accessories and options.

Comparative Information for the BVM-E OLED Series models and PVM OLED models
The BVM-E Series differs from the PVM OLED models in a number of ways (see also comments about the Panel Consistency below).  For example, the E Series has 12 bit output precision as it maps to the 10-bit OLED Panel Driver, versus 10-bit video processing in the PVM.  The E Series does not have a built-in waveform monitor, nor audio speakers, nor a headphones jack, has only a one amber light tally, and there are no embedded within the monitor controls (external control is required). But the E Series has expanded gamut capability (S-Gamut, and D-Cine) with +12db Chroma Up, S-Log, 5 User Color Temp settings (versus 1), a future Display Port, up to 30 Channel Settings using the BKM16R7, 4 option slots (as compared to none), an interlace mode, an enhanced unique I/P Mode, HD Frame Capture Capability with memory Stick save/load, Side-By-Side, Wipe, Butterfly, Picture & Picture Mode, Pixel Zoom, 3D signal analysis capability, closed caption capability, 5 marker presets with more aspect ratio choices, SD aspect ratio correction, and 16 assignable function keys when using remote control via the BKM16R7 (versus 7), and built-in Sony test signal generator. The BVM-E170 can run on 24-28V DC, whereas the PVM-1741 can run on 12v DC or 12v DC Battery, and the PVM-170 runs on 12v DC with an adapter, or battery.  For more comparisons, consult with VTP and Sony.

OLED Panel Consistency and Related Sony Policy
The physical manufacturing grades of the OLED panels in the BVM–E Series are said to be of higher grade than the PVM OLED units.  While every effort is made by Sony to assure panel consistency overall, Sony has complex criteria for acceptable tolerances of both panel grades with regard to visible, semi-visible, or prominent points of defect (if any).  The E series panels are said to have the highest quality panels. Sony reserves the right to determine the state of all of these panels prior to their sale, and with respect to the applicability of any Sony pixel-related warranty coverage (if Sony deems warranty coverage to be applicable) upon customer inspection at or after the point of sale. For more information, consult with Sony.

*BVM-E Series Notes

2048x1080 23.98/24/25 fps 4:4:4 is supported on a single 3G connection. Dual Link HD-SDI would require 2xBKM-243HS, 2xBKM-244CC, or 1x BKM-250TG.

A BKM-250TG is required to be installed and the selected source input for 3D analysis modes, serial number of module affects available mode: Difference Display, Checkerboard Display, L/R Switch Display, Horopter Check Display, and Flip H Display.  Additional limitations of these modes exist. Refer to VTP and Sony for more detailed information regarding supported BKM boards and required serial number ages for these functions.

It is possible that the HDMI connection into the BVME may be VSDB HDMI table restricted for bit depth and auto negotiate from the sending device, but there is some BVME menu intervention for selecting BVME bit depth accepted by turning off the BVME HDMI auto function.  HDCP and deep color protocols are supported. Baseband 3G, Dual-Link HD-SDI and other video input configurations can easily be added or expanded by installing up to 4 optional BKM input adaptor boards.

In all cases for 1:1 pixel Native Scan and for Interlace Display Mode, pixel to pixel viewing capability is dependant on the signals and what input connections are used. Refer to VTP and Sony for more detailed information regarding these capabilities and associated limitations.

Memory Sticks are sold separately.  Contact VTP and/or Sony for Memory Stick compatibility.

D-Cine is a color gamut emulating the color gamut described in SMPTE RP 431-2-2007, but in the BVME250 and BVME170 the RGB chromaticity (red, green portion) of SMPTE RP 431-2-2007 is not covered in full.  VTP currently has reason to believe that properly applied external color management may be able to shift the primaries to cover this space accordingly in the E Series, given a powerful enough 3D LUT and external image LUT processing device (e.g., a minimum cube size of 65x, 2n + 1 , where n = 5). Contact VTP for more information on applied external color management products and related methodology.

See Below for control accessories and options.
